For the Maynard Jordan Planetarium’s 70th anniversary, the hope is to replace our current digital projection technology by upgrading from 4K to 8K resolution - a four-fold increase – and the computer cluster that drives the planetarium upgrading computer cluster that drives the planetarium.
We’ve raised the funds to accomplish our initial phase – replacing the carpeting and seating in the planetarium in late June/early July – and the hope is to continue the momentum to carry forward into this next phase of technology upgrades. Approximately $850,000 will be needed to do so. The simple truth is that the planetarium will need to replace its projection technology by the end of 2028. Our current 4K technology was the standard in 2014 when this current building was opened, but there has been massive advancement in the years since. Upgrading to the modern 8K tech would give us much greater resolution, allowing for enhanced and new programming opportunities and advanced science visualization opportunities for university researchers and students.

It would also make us the most advanced planetarium north of Boston. The planetarium has served over 1 million visitors since opening in 1954. Your donation will help us to continue serving the university, k-12 students and general public at the highest level.
We’re shooting for the stars – care to take aim with us?
